Habit Coffee Summer 2024

My process for these works is driven by play and surrender to the essential qualities of visual experiences. These paintings are the result of seeking a new stylistic approach to abstraction that is grounded in awareness of subtle moments of visual curiosity and unconventional instances of beauty. Harmony and juxtaposition guide the communion of fragmented visual imagery drawn from various sources to create unique interactions of colour, shape, and form. Together, these paintings represent a collection of abstract microscapes that draw parallels from the physical world while also inviting immersion into new subjective spaces.

Bio

Kathryn is a visual artist based in Lekwungen Territory/Victoria, BC, whose practice explores and critiques the way humans see, experience, and relate to the physical world. Integrating her background in neuroscience and interest in visual cognition with more spiritual explorations of awareness, Kathryn’s paintings offer new perspectives on how we encounter and relate to our surroundings. Leaning heavily on the process of collage, her paintings integrate various sources of imagery to create unique visual experiences that disrupt recognition, draw attention to attentional biases, and question awareness. Kathryn completed her BFA in Drawing and Painting at OCAD University (2021), and her work has been exhibited in Toronto and Victoria.
