Kathryn is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Lekwungen Territory/Victoria, BC, whose creative practice is heavily influenced by her connection to land and living things. While her vivid paintings often verge on abstraction, she strives to balance the aesthetic with an underlying sense of environmental advocacy and awareness towards nature. Her recent work investigates the human experience of nature through an analysis of cultural and psychological factors. Utilizing her background in neuroscience, Kathryn’s oil paintings offer a critique of our cognitive and visual experience of nature by illuminating attentional biases we may hold against plants. Her creative process involves collaging, distorting, and manipulating imagery of nature, to question what we pay attention to and what we recognize. Kathryn is also interested in the status of nature within Western culture, and her work often references imagery of digital culture, consumerism, and the domestic. Her paintings shed light on the ways we consume and encounter nature, and by doing so, attempt to foster more mindful relationships with our natural environment.
